Lake Trout fishing on Grand Traverse BaySummer Fishing on the Bay is Good!

Fishing on West Grand Traverse Bay this summer is off to an excellent start. We are getting limit catches of Lake Trout with the occasional King Salmon or Ciscoe to add to the excitement. It seems that the fish are active and being found on many of the traditional hot spots around the Bay. This week Captain Chris, on the Leelanautical, has trolled the south tip of Power Island near the green buoy in about 50-70 feet of water. The typical set up is Hammerhead Lake Trout Killer #4 cowbells followed by a Pink Luminous Spin-n-Glow on the two out downriggers and a Dreamweaver Kevorkian 10 Spin Doctor followed by a Whirly Gig green and glow on the center downrigger. These three set ups are consistently taking fish when set in the 45–50-degree water. However, some of the fish are also suspended in the water column. We have also found that a 5-color lead core line with a Stinger Chrome Double Orange Crush and a 6 color lead core line with a Stinger PK Special, both standard spoons are taking the suspended fish.

Captain Tony, on the Leelanaut, has found Lake Trout and Kings on the west side of Grand Traverse Bay with a similar set up. Using Hammerhead #4 chrome cowbells with a Pink Luminous Spin-n-Glow on one downrigger and a Dreamweaver 10-inch Dragon Slayer Spin Doctor followed by a Dreamweaver Whirly Gig green/glow color set at 45 feet down, just above the bottom of the bank, has produced good numbers of Lake Trout. Captain Tony also likes to use Stinger Double Orange Crush and PK Special stand spoons on the 5 and 6 color lead core line. This week while trolling the Double Orange Crush took a nice 12-pound King Salmon, that was angled to the boat by Keith.

Captain Dylan, on the Leelanautical, has been able to get the cooler filled with Lake Trout fishing the west side of Grand Traverse Bay following the contours of the bank fishing in the cool water of 45-50 degrees using a spread of downriggers with cowbells and planer boards with spoons.
